Step 2. Full Body Mud Mask (15-25 minutes)
Ah, mud. It’s in the backyard, under your shoes out on your hike, and now it’s all over your body. Clay and mud for therapeutic applications is specially extracted earth that is mineral rich and has many benefits including absorbing excess oil, dead skin cells, dirt and toxins from the skin’s surface, imparting nourishing minerals to the body, improving circulation, tightening pores and toning the skin.
My mud recommendations:
#1 Ahava Natural Dead Sea Body Mud $16.00 USD for one 14oz./400g package (www.ahava.com)
or at amazon.com Ahava Natural Dead Sea Body Mud
#2 Mountain Rose Herbs French Green Clay $11.00 for 1lb. (www.mountainroseherbs.com)
For an added therapeutic touch, I recommend applying warm mud. Applying the mud warm not only feels soothing, it also enhances the effects of the minerals and can relieve sore, aching muscles with greater effectiveness.
Prepping the Clay
To apply warm clay, I recommend warming a pot of water on the stove, turn the heat down to low before boiling is reached. Place about 8oz. or 1 cup of clay (for the whole body, face included) in a glass mixing bowl.
Add some of the hot water from the stove, about 1/2 cup at a time, stirring into the clay and adding more water until a good mud consistency is achieved.
The clay is very absorbent, which is why it is best to mix the water in gradually, mixing to a fine paste that is easy to spread on the body. Now, place a lid or aluminium foil over the mixing bowl and immerse it in the pot of hot water on the stove for about 3 minutes.
This will heat the mud without overheating it, making it a pleasant temperature for spreading on your body. Heating the mud on the stove this way also seems to activate the mud’s minerals more effectively than would simply adding hot tap water.
Take the warm mud prep into your toasty steamy bathroom, lay the old towels on the floor beneath you and apply the mud to your skin.
Apply to the face, hands, feet, arms, legs, torso—everywhere. If your skin is dry or sensitive, only leave the mud on for about 5 minutes, otherwise leave it on for about 10 or 15 minutes.
Now, hop in the shower and allow the mineral mud to dissolve off your. Lightly towel off with one of the old bath towels in case you still have a bit of mud lingering on you.
